Arawak Statue Dedication/Ceremony
Up to St. Barths Happenings
Lots of talk and questions and most of us imagined the new sculpture piece of an Arawak Indian with sword held high would be a little taller than it is. Now, officially installed atop La Tourmente, the piece looks a little small (we've begun to refer to it as the 'Pigmywak' ) as we whorl around the round-a-bout to view it from all sides.
Saw the piece just after the ceremonial unveiling. The circular garden was laid lush with asparagus ferns and lantana bushes but when we passed it again just hours later all the plants were gone. Guess they haven't decided quite yet what our new Indian friend should be looking out for - approaching planes, a run-away Smart car, or beautiful flowers.
I agree it could be taller, but maybe there is a very strict limit because of landing planes - I know it makes no difference, but it could be a standard regulation.
I am sure they will do something to replace the flowers, which would not last of course. maybe some nice small tees or something...
Early on we heard there were bets as to which airline would 'clip' the sword out of the statue's hand but as we can all see now, a plane would have to be dangerously low to attempt that.
I am sure, too, that flowers will be replanted before high season.
Since his arrival, Arawak has been see wearing a swimming outfit, as well as a baseball cap on one occasion. I think it is a nice idea to see his wearing different outfits from time to time
